Good Dog took on a hazard that Edmonton dog owners know about and still misjudge: open water at off-leash parks once the thaw starts. Trailhead signage gets walked past all winter, so we designed an epitaph, something beautiful to stop for. Dogs and ice were the two images at the centre of the problem, and the most immediate move was to make one out of the other: a dog rendered in ice, installed near the water's edge as a tribute to the animals who had gone through and a reminder to keep yours close. To fight typical Edmonton winter freeze-thaw cycles, we modelled a custom mold and blew fiberglass into it. The sculptures came out light, redeployable for years, and convincingly icy-looking. Hollow shells then solved a second problem: in winter, most dogs get walked after dark. We lit the figures aglow from inside and ran them off a small solar panel in the base, so each one lit the path during wintertime hours.

Dogs make our hearts glow. When we lose them, our hearts break. This campaign spread awareness and acted as a tribute to the furry friends that we’ve lost to thin ice.
